Fluoridation in Oregon

FLUORIDATION FOR OREGON:
IT’S ABOUT TIME

The Oregon Dental Association and the Healthy Smiles Coalition urge you to contact your Legislators in support of Senate Bill 33, which requires Oregon water systems serving more than 10,000 people to fluoridate their water supplies. Fluoridation is a perfectly safe and proven public health measure that has been protecting the teeth of U.S. citizens for 60 years. More than 145 million people in 10,000 communities across the United States enjoy the benefits of fluoridated water.

But not Oregon

Only about 20 percent of Oregonians currently drink fluoridated water, ranking us 48th out of 50 states in terms of protecting our citizen’s teeth. That statistic is not only appalling, it’s expensive. Untreated tooth decay causes children to miss school and adults to miss work; it results in lower productivity, and ultimately hits everyone’s pocketbook in the form of increased insurance premiums and higher hospital bills.

Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease—five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. But unlike asthma and hay fever, tooth decay is entirely preventable, and water fluoridation is the safest and most cost-effective method for preventing it. Water fluoridation protects everyone young and old, rich and poor, at a cost of only about $1 per person per year.

And isn’t a lifetime of healthy teeth worth $1 a year?

DONATED DENTAL DAY

Feb 22, 2007
By Diane

February 2nd, local dentists, dental assistants, hygienists, and multiple office helpers volunteered their day to offer free dental services and education to the underserved, low-income children and adults who aren’t receiving the oral health care they need.

It began on a very cold morning at 7:00 a.m., with many people already in line at the tent by the dental van. Each individual was screened and most were sent to various dental offices that day to have their dental needs taken care of.

We had a great turn out. By 10:00, all the available appointments had been filled. The remaining patients were still screened and given a number to call, so they can be seen at the next available appointment through the dental van and “Warm Line”.

All in all, the day was a huge success and our office was proud to be a part of the Donated Dental Day.

Here is a slide show from our summer BBQ.
